Durban, 5 August 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to inform motorists of a temporary road closure on the N3 for the demolition of the Langford Road Bridge, as part of the N3 Westville to Paradise Valley upgrade.

“Following the demolition of the Lancaster Terrace bridge in February 2024, and its subsequent reconstruction, the demolition and ultimate reconstruction of the Langford Road Bridge forms part of the next phase of SANRAL’s capacity and safety improvements to both the N3 and the eThekwini road network,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KZN Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer.

The temporary road closures will take place as follows:

“The demolition and ultimate reconstruction of the Langford Road Bridge is a crucial step in enabling the addition of extra lanes on the N3 below. Once its demolition is complete vehicle traffic will be accommodated on the soon to be opened Lancaster Terrace bridge. A temporary steel bridge will be constructed near the current Langford Road bridge to accommodate pedestrians until the new bridge is complete,” continued Lowe.

As required for the safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans are in place.

SANRAL DONATES LEARNING EQUIPMENT FOR BOVAAL AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL LEARNERS

MEDIA RELEASE

SANRAL DONATES LEARNING EQUIPMENT FOR BOVAAL AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL LEARNERS

SANRAL recently handed over learning equipment to Bovaal Agricultural School learners

Free State Province, 5 August 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) commemorated Nelson Mandela International Day in the Free State Province by donating learning equipment for learners of Bovaal Agricultural School in Bothaville this past week. The learning equipment included laptops to assist with digital literacy, gym equipment to promote physical wellness, and agricultural equipment to support the learners in practical learning in agricultural studies as well as to prepare them for real-world farming and agri-business applications.

This meaningful initiative by the road agency was part of its ongoing endeavours aimed at uplifting communities that live alongside its national road network.

“In line with SANRAL’s commitment to building communities beyond roads, this year’s Mandela Day activity for the Free State Province took place in Bothaville because this area hosts an active Urgent Routine Road Maintenance Project on the R30 national road which is being upgraded by SANRAL. Upgrading this national road will greatly assist in ensuring a safer and well-maintained road infrastructure for residents and road users. The R30 national road is one of the roads that was recently handed over to SANRAL by the Free State Provincial Government,” said Thandeka Ngema, SANRAL’s Acting Stakeholder Relations Coordinator for the Free State Province.

Bovaal Agricultural School is a public institution which delivers agriculturally based education to learners from surrounding rural communities. The school plays an important role in equipping young minds with technical skills in farming and agri-science, sectors which are critical to the region’s socio-economic development, which is predominantly agricultural driven.

Expressing his gratitude, Bovaal Agricultural School’s Principal, Hendrik Kleynhans, said the school is fortunate to have been identified by SANRAL for its Mandela Day initiative.

“On behalf of the school management, we want to express our heartfelt appreciation to SANRAL for this equipment, and we undertake to look after it with care. This equipment is going to assist us greatly with our mandate of delivering agriculturally based education. This year is our tenth consecutive year where we received a 100% pass rate. Last year, we had learners from these rural areas achieving Level 7 in Mathematics, with a 67% Bachelor rate,” said Kleynhans.

Nelson Mandela International Day is a global initiative that is rooted in the core values of community upliftment and empowerment, education development and infrastructure support, echoing the ethos of “67 minutes” inspired by former President Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

For SANRAL, this year’s initiative was aimed at supporting a community institution that aligns itself directly with the South African government’s mandate, which includes economic participation through rural and township development and agricultural revitalisation.

SANRAL Signs R7bn Loan with New Development Bank to Fund Toll Portfolio Projects

MEDIA RELEASE

SANRAL Signs R7bn Loan with New Development Bank to Fund Toll Portfolio Projects

SANRAL CEO Reginald Demana and the NDB’s Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Monale Ratsoma signed a R7bn loan agreement in Johannesburg today

Pretoria, 22 July 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has successfully signed a R7 billion loan agreement with the New Development Bank (NDB) to support its various toll portfolio projects in the country.

Speaking at the official signing ceremony of the loan agreement in Sandton, Johannesburg, today (Tuesday), SANRAL Board Member Mahesh Fakir said that SANRAL is looking forward to the positive impact that will emanate from the long overdue funding. He also said that the funding will greatly assist the road agency to carry out its mandate.

“This loan agreement comes against the backdrop where the South African Government under President Cyril Ramaphosa will be spending almost a trillion rand in the next three years on the development of our country’s infrastructure. We are proud to be able to say that we are going to spend these funds on our road infrastructure projects, with key road works such as upgrading our national roads, widening carriageways, building extra lanes, as well as many other aspects that relate to road infrastructure,” said Fakir.

Fakir also said that key projects that will be funded through the NDB loan include the N3 Paradise Valley to Marianhill Toll Plaza, N3 Marianhill Toll Plaza to Key Ridge, N1 Zandkraal to Scottland, and the N1 Scottland to Winburg South project.

These four projects represent over R12.7 billion in investment, with more than R3.8 billion reserved for SMMEs and targeted enterprises, close to R1 billion in labour-driven economic inclusion, and far-reaching logistical, safety, and mobility enhancements for South Africa’s most important trade routes. These projects are expected to create an estimated 6600 job opportunities for local communities that live alongside them.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to support our government’s drive to achieve higher levels of economic growth, SANRAL will continue to implement strategic projects across the country and undertake massive investment in new infrastructure projects, while also upgrading and maintaining the national roads infrastructure projects that fall within its ambit. The loan agreement will support and allow SANRAL to continue paving the way to progress for the South African economy and society in general. SANRAL is looking forward to the positive impact that will emanate from the long overdue funding that will greatly assist the entity carry out its mandate,” said SANRAL’s Chief Executive Officer, Reginald Demana.

Demana also added that the loan will become effective as soon as the standard conditions precedent have been met. The balance of the borrowing limit (pegged at R16.5 billion) approved by National Treasury not utilised by the NDB loan will be used to raise funding in the domestic market, including, but not limited to bonds, and syndicated and bi-lateral loans, he said.

According to Monale Ratsoma, the NDB’s Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, new economic opportunities will be provided for ordinary South Africans through the loan agreement with SANRAL.

“We are here together as partners that share a common vision for South Africa’s future. As the NDB, we are fully behind the mandate of SANRAL to improve people’s lives and enable much needed commerce through the provision of quality road infrastructure. The NDB is also proud that the financing offered is denominated in local currency. This will provide the necessary cushioning against currency fluctuations, which often tend to reduce the benefits of the support offered and increase overall risk to the fiscus and corporate balance sheets if not adequately hedged. As the NDB, we have a deliberate focus in providing local currency financing to our partners,” said Ratsoma.

President Ramaphosa announced during this year’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) that the South African Government continues to engage local and international financial institutions and investors to unlock R100 billion in infrastructure financing.

A project preparation bid window has been launched to fast-track investment readiness. This includes revised regulations for public-private partnerships, which will unlock private sector expertise and funds. Government will spend more than R940 billion on infrastructure over the next three years. This will include R375 billion in spending by SOEs. This funding will revitalise South Africa’s roads and bridges, build dams and waterways, modernise our ports and airports, and power the country’s economy, President Ramaphosa added.

SANRAL to Fix R21 Sinkhole in Olifantsfontein

MEDIA RELEASE

SANRAL to Fix R21 Sinkhole in Olifantsfontein

Gauteng, 17 July 2025– The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) is ready to fix an emergency sinkhole located at Km 0.3 on section 2 of the R21 national road, northbound in Olifantsfontein. The urgent repair project, valued at R154 million, will not only fix a major road hazard but also open doors for job creation, training, and empowerment to locals.

The sinkhole has raised safety concerns for road users traveling in and out of Olifantsfontein and surrounding areas. The roads agency has appointed Terra Strata Construction as the main contractor to carry out the critical repair works for a period of 11 months. The project is currently in its mobilisation phase, sourcing SMMEs and labourers and preparing for site establishment. Construction is expected to start mid-September.

SANRAL’s Provincial Head for Gauteng province, Progress Hlahla, noted that this is the second sinkhole to be fixed in the vicinity of the Olifantsfontein interchange. “This area has dolomite rock which increases the risk of sinkhole formation. In this regard, SANRAL continues to closely monitor its roads and will act to mitigate any risks to road users. While repairs are underway, there will be some traffic disruptions, but SANRAL will endeavour to minimize the impact to motorists” said Hlahla.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement SMME information session, convened together with the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, in Kempton Park on Friday, Nontobeko Mathenjwa, who is a SANRAL Project Manager in the Gauteng province, highlighted the scope of works and opportunities that the project will bring to locals.

“The project scope includes drilling boreholes, compact grouting, and resurfacing the road after the sinkhole repairs. But what makes this project even more meaningful is the intentional inclusion of SMMEs, local labourers, community members and development of designated groups”.

“The project’s contractor participation goals are designed to empower SMMEs and support inclusive economic growth. We encourage participation from targeted enterprises with CIDB grades 1 to 4 and, there are also opportunities for unskilled labourers from the local community” said Mathenjwa.

Elaborating on the opportunities, Mathenjwa also said the project has work packages that do not require CIDB registration for wider economic inclusion. These include services such as security provision, employee transport, diesel supply, mobile toilets, accommodation of traffic, and plant hire.

“To further support development and sustainability of local businesses, training will be offered to SMMEs involved in the project, to better equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge for future opportunities in the industry. All training will include both theory and practical on-site components to ensure hands on experience” added Mathenjwa.

In addition to project specific training, community members from the affected area will have access to training opportunities for the duration of the project. Through the project, SANRAL will also create space for FET college students, in-service trainees, and candidate engineers to receive the practical experience they require to complete their studies and grow professionally.

SANRAL remains committed to safe roads, empowered communities, and a transformed construction industry.

SMMEs are encouraged to stay informed about upcoming tender opportunities by visiting the SANRAL electronic supplier desk website on www.sanralesdd.co.za.

PARTIAL FAST LANE CLOSURES ON N3 KEY RIDGE TO HAMMARSDALE INTERCHANGE

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

PARTIAL FAST LANE CLOSURES ON N3 KEY RIDGE TO HAMMARSDALE INTERCHANGE

Durban, 15 July 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises motorists of a planned partial fast lane closure on the N3 northbound between Key Ridge and the Hammarsdale Interchange. The closure will take place on 2 August 2025, from 09h00 to 15h00, to allow for the surveying of traffic lanes as part of the N3 Section 2 Realignment Project.

“Fast lane closures will be necessary between the N3/M13 and Hammarsdale interchanges for the survey of existing traffic lanes. The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), with the assistance of our contractor’s traffic accommodation team, will manage and monitor traffic during these closures” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KZN Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer.

Lane Closure Details:

Saturday, 2 August 2025
09:00 to 9:15 – Close the N3 fast lane.
09:15 to 14:45 – Survey of existing fast lane.
14:45 to 15:00 – Reopen N3.

The R103 will be available as an alternative route during the closures. Should high volumes of vehicles utilize the alternative route substantial delays are, however, likely as the R103 is unable to handle the same volume of traffic as the N3.

“We ask motorists to be patient during the closure and to plan and adjust their route trips to accommodate the closure whilst adhering to speed limits. SANRAL apologies to the motoring public for any inconvenience caused and thanks them for their patience during road construction,” said Lowe.
