TEMPORARY NIGHTTIME ROAD CLOSURE ON N2 NORTHBOUND BETWEEN MT EDGECOMBE AND SIBAYA INTERCHANGE

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

TEMPORARY NIGHTTIME ROAD CLOSURE ON N2 NORTHBOUND BETWEEN MT EDGECOMBE AND SIBAYA INTERCHANGE

Durban, 11 November 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) announces a temporary nighttime road closure on the N2 northbound carriageway between the Mount Edgecombe and Sibaya Interchanges to install one overhead sign gantry which spans the N2.

“Construction is getting to an advanced stage on the N2 and now requires installation of road sign gantries. This closure is part of the ongoing upgrade process for the N2 between KwaMashu and Mdloti,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KZN Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer.

The temporary road closure will take place as follows:

  • N2 North Bound (travelling from Durban to King Shaka Internation Airport) Carriageway Closure from Mount Edgecombe Interchange and Sibaya Interchange:

o From 19:00 on Saturday, 15 November 2025 to 03:00 on Sunday, 16 November 2025

Note that the N2 South Bound (travelling from King Shaka International Airport to Durban) carriageway will remain unaffected.

As required for the safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans are in place and motorists using this section of the N2 will notice that signage, barriers, and traffic calming are currently being installed.

A detailed alternative route guide is included below. Please note that heavy motor vehicles cannot reach the M4 through Umhlanga due to the tight turns. Such vehicles will have to use the R102 to Verulam if they have not joined the M4 before the Mount Edgecombe Interchange. The R102 to Verulam detour will significantly increase travel time.

“All road-users are advised to plan their routes ahead of time and where possible leave for destinations earlier than usual. Trucks and heavy vehicle operators are advised to delay their trips over this period if possible or find suitable staging areas to avoid major congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure that their drivers are aware of the closure,” said Lowe.

SANRAL to Inject Almost R4bn on N1 National Road Projects in Free State Province

MEDIA RELEASE

SANRAL to Inject Almost R4bn on N1 National Road Projects in Free State Province

Free State Province, 6 November 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited’s (SANRAL) injection of almost R4billion in the upgrade of the N1 national road from Scottland to Winburg and Zandkraal to Scottland in the Free State Province will go a long way in bringing much-needed job opportunities for SMMEs and local community members.

Speaking at community engagements in Winburg and Verkeerdevlei this week, SANRAL Free State’s Provincial Head, Marlize Nel-Verwey, said the project, which started in January this year, is expected to be completed in July 2028.

“SANRAL always ensures that local communities, including women, young people, people with disabilities and military veterans play a meaningful role, and benefit from its road construction projects. Now that we are in the process of opening a new provincial office here in Bloemfontein for the Free State Province, this will allow us to better enhance our stakeholder engagement endeavours with the province. We have also increased the numbers of roads that have been transferred to us from the province in recent months. The opening of our new office, therefore, will make it easier for us to get closer to our road network in the Free State,” said Nel-Verwey.

Just over 1200 kilometres of the province’s roads were handed over to be incorporated and fall under SANRAL’s management by the Free State Provincial Government, added Nel-Verwey.

“Key works include the addition of two lanes in the northerly direction to create a four-lane dual carriageway will be a major part of the project. As a result, several river bridges as well as major culverts will be lengthened to accommodate the upgrade. SMMEs will play an active role in the project and subcontractor works packages like the erection and repair of fencing at borrow pits, routine maintenance for collection of litter and debris, cleaning of culverts and concrete drains, and grading of temporary gravel deviations, to mention a few are in the procurement process,” said Sumith Kasserchun, SANRAL’s Project Manager for the Free State Province.

Working together with the South African Revenue Service (SARS), SANRAL also used the information session as an opportunity to share information about how local SMMEs can be tax compliant, and how they can also be trained and equipped to enhance their business acumen and tendering skills.

Tshegare Moletsane, SANRAL’s Transformation Officer, said that SANRAL will continue to work with the Project Liaison Committee (PLC) to ensure that information is shared with local communities and that there is ongoing transparency on subcontracting as well as job opportunities for local communities.

Moletsane said: “Although our core focus on this project is on contractors from Grade One to Four, as guided by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), SANRAL also encourages manufactures and material suppliers (such cement and paint to participate, and also benefit from the 30% Contractor Participation Goals (CPG) allocation”.

TEMPORARY NORTH BOUND ROAD CLOSURES ON LYELL STREET, N11 SECTION 2

TRAFFIC ADVISORY
TEMPORARY NORTH BOUND ROAD CLOSURES ON LYELL STREET, N11 SECTION 2

Ladysmith, 29 October 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to advise motorists of the upcoming temporary closure of Lyell Street, N11 Section 2 (km 3+948 to km 4+228) northbound only, between the Queen Street and Alfred Street intersections.

These works form part of the broader N11-2 upgrade project (km 0.000 to km 28+000) aimed at improving traffic flow and safety along this key corridor. The temporary full road closure is necessary to accommodate construction activity in a safe and controlled environment.

“This closure is necessary to enable the construction of a Junction Control Point (JCP) within the town. Given the limited workspace, closing the northbound carriageway is the safest and most practical option to protect both road users and construction personnel, said SANRAL’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Project Manager, Ayanda Chagwe.

SCHEDULED ROAD CLOSURE

  • Route: Lyell Street, N11 Section 2 (km 3+948 to km 4+228) – Northbound only
  • Between: Queen Street intersection and Alfred Street intersection
  • Duration: From Tuesday, 4 November 2025 at 08:00 to Saturday, 6 December 2025 at 14:00

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

For traffic from Colenso/R103 (affected direction):

  • Turn left at the Lyell and Murchison intersection
  • Continue straight until Alfred Street
  • Turn right at Alfred Street
  • Turn left to rejoin N11/Lyell Street

For traffic from Town/Newcastle (unaffected direction):

  • Continue straight along N11/Lyell Street

As part of the safety measures for both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place throughout the construction period. Motorists are advised to plan their trips accordingly, allow extra travel time, and adhere to all posted signage and speed restrictions. Truck and heavy vehicle operators are encouraged to make use of alternative routes to minimise congestion and delays. Public transport operators are also urged to ensure their drivers are informed of the closure and the available detour routes affecting commuter travel.

SANRAL appeals to all road users to note and comply with advance warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling through or near construction zones. The speed limit along the route will be temporarily reduced to ensure the safety of both workers and motorists.

“We are committed to completing this section of work safely and efficiently while minimising disruption to road users. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of all motorists as we undertake these essential improvements to enhance mobility and safety within the Ladysmith area,” said Chagwe.
