Durban, 24 July 2026 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to advise motorists of temporary closures of the N2 carriageways between EB Cloete and Edwin Swales Interchanges, as part of the ongoing N2/N3 EB Cloete Interchange upgrade.
“These closures are part of the ongoing progress in the upgrade of the EB Cloete Interchange. They are required to allow for the placing of concrete beams for the Wiggins Road bridge extension, which will then be able to accept the additional lanes constructed on the N2,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Office Road Safety Specialist Engineer.
The temporary road closures will take place as follows:
- N2 Northbound Carriageway Closure:
This carriageway will be fully closed from 18:00, Saturday 1 August 2026 to 05:00, Sunday 2 August 2026 between the Edwin Swales (M7) interchange and the EB Cloete Interchange - N2 Southbound Carriageway Closure:
This carriageway will be fully closed from 18:00, Sunday 2 August 2026 to 05:00, Monday 3 August 2026 between the EB Cloete interchange and the Edwin Swales (M7) Interchange
As required for the safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place.
Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period, find suitable staging areas or reroute using the alternative route options to avoid major congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes.
All road-users are advised to plan their routes ahead of time and where possible leave for destinations earlier than usual.
CLOSURE LOCATIONS:
N2 Northbound Closure (Amanzimtoti to Durban):
- N2 Northbound fully closed after the Edwin Swales (M7) Interchange off-ramp.
- N2 Northbound on-ramp from M7/Edwin Swales fully closed.
N2 Southbound Closure (Durban to Amanzimtoti):
- N2 Southbound and ramps from Durban and Pietermaritzburg heading south fully closed at the EB Cloete Interchange.
- Ramp from Durban CBD to N2 Southbound (Amanzimtoti) fully closed.
- Ramp from Pietermaritzburg to N2 Southbound (Amanzimtoti) fully closed.
- All other ramps at EB Cloete interchange will remain fully open.

“SANRAL appeals to road users to note and comply with the advance warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling past the construction work zones. To prioritise the safety of both the construction workers and road users, the speed limit along the route is reduced during construction,” added Lowe. __________________________________________________________________________________
