Durban, 8 July 2026 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises motorists of a temporary nighttime road closure on the N2 South Bound carriageway between the Umdloti Interchange and the Mount Edgecombe Interchange to install two overhead sign gantries. One of which spans the full width of the N2 South Bound Carriageway.
“Construction is getting to an advanced stage on the N2 and now requires installation of road sign gantries. This closure is part of the ongoing upgrade process for the N2 between KwaMashu and Mdloti,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KZN Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer.
The temporary road closure will take place as follows:
- N2 South Bound carriageway (travelling from King Shaka Internation Airport to Durban). Closure from Umdloti Interchange to Mount Edgecombe Interchange:
- From 19:00 on Saturday, 11 July 2026 to 04:00 on Sunday, 12 July 2026
Please note that the N2 North Bound carriageway (travelling from Durban to King Shaka International Airport) will remain unaffected.
As required for the safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans are in place and motorists using this section of the N2 will notice that signage, barriers, and traffic calming are currently being installed.
A detailed alternative route guide is included below. Please note that heavy motor vehicles cannot reach the N2 through Umhlanga (Armstrong Avenue/M41) due to the tight turns. Such vehicles must continue on the M4 towards Durban or detour via the R102. Note that the detours will significantly increase travel time.
All road-users are advised to plan their routes ahead of time and where possible leave for destinations earlier than usual. Trucks and heavy vehicle operators are advised to delay their trips over this period if possible or find suitable staging areas to avoid major congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure that their drivers are aware of the closure.
