Durban, 20 July 2026 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises motorists of temporary rolling road closures and traffic changes on the N2/N3 Interchange as part of ongoing road improvement works. From Friday, 24 July 2026, traffic on the N3 Eastbound carriageway towards Durban CBD, between the Pavilion/Spine Road on-ramp and the EB Cloete Interchange, will be diverted from the existing carriageway onto the newly constructed lanes located in the centre median.

“The temporary rolling road closures are required to safely implement the traffic switch onto the newly constructed lanes and to enable the next phase of construction, which involves widening the N3 Eastbound carriageway. The closures will be managed on site by the traffic accommodation team, with support from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), to ensure the safety of both road users and construction personnel. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, reduce their speed, adhere to all temporary traffic signage, and remain alert to the revised lane configuration when travelling through the affected area,” said Mpho Nephembani, SANRAL’s KwaZulu-Natal Province Project Engineer.

The N3 Eastbound carriageway will remain open to traffic. No change to trip routing is required for motorists travelling through the project site. Motorists should, however, expect a changed lane configuration, adjusted barriers and revised temporary road markings through this section of the construction zone.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow for additional travel time, and adhere to posted signage and reduced speed limits within the construction zone. Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to plan trips carefully over this period and, where possible, use suitable staging areas to avoid contributing to congestion while the traffic switch is being implemented. Public transport operators are requested to ensure their drivers are aware of the changed lane configuration and any temporary traffic management measures that may affect commuter routes.

“SANRAL appeals to all road users to remain vigilant and comply with the advance warning signs, temporary lane markings, and reduced speed limits when travelling through the construction zone. These measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of both road users and construction personnel. We urge motorists to exercise patience, follow all traffic management instructions, and adjust their driving to the changing road conditions,” added Nephembani.
