ROAD CLOSURE ON N1 BETWEEN COLESBERG AND HANOVER, NORTHERN CAPE
PROVINCE
COLESBERG, 02 July 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to inform the public of a total road closure on the N1 national road between Colesberg and Hanover following an incident involving a heavy motor vehicle (HMV).
At approximately 09:07 today (Wednesday, 02 July 2025), a fully loaded HMV overturned on the N1 Section 11 at kilometre 54.2. The vehicle was transporting gas cylinders, some of which have been punctured or damaged. As a result, the area has been declared unsafe for road users.
This incident has been classified as a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) incident, and all Road Incident Management System (RIMS) protocols are being followed to manage the scene and ensure safety.
Key details:
- The N1 is closed in both directions between Colesberg and Hanover.
- All traffic is being redirected via the N9 national road as an alternative route.
- Emergency services and law enforcement are on site.
SANRAL is working with relevant authorities to clear the area and will reopen the road once it is safe to do so.
“The safety of road users is our highest priority. Due to the presence of hazardous materials, we are taking all necessary precautions and working closely with emergency teams to stabilise the scene. We ask motorists to cooperate and make use of the N9 alternative route until the N1 can be safely reopened,” said Emile du Preez, SANRAL’s Provincial Head for the Northern Cape Province.
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys, accordingly, remain patient, and comply with all traffic instructions issued at the scene.
SANRAL thanks the public for their understanding and cooperation during this period.
