Is SANRAL serious?
Dear Sirs

I was very pleased to have found this publication of SANRAL’s and hope it will give me the opportunity to ask some questions.

I have read that SANRAL is pushing for the transformation of the construction business in the country and that you are looking at the advancement of the cause of small black businesses. As I run such a company, I want to praise you for the new direction you have taken. It really is necessary, as it is very difficult to compete with big businesses who have been in the construction industry for much longer. It is also hard to find enough trained people. And finance can be a problem too.

I hope that SANRAL’s new approach takes all these things into account. If it does not, it would just be lip service from yet another company. We small businesses need all the help we can get so that we can compete on an equal footing.

Where can I find out more about your new transformation plans and see if you’re serious?

– D Mahlangu, via email
Ed’s Note: Thank you for your interest. SANRAL has been on the transformation path for a long time. What you have seen is a serious stepping up of the process with a drive to address exactly the issues you have raised. We cannot, however, assist with the question of finances. Celebrating a legend

If former President Nelson Mandela was still around today, he’d be celebrating his 100th birthday in July. But since our beloved Tata Madiba isn’t, we’ve chosen to celebrate for him and everyone who loved him. Mandela had, among many other talents, a way with words. He could get to the heart of any issue with a sentence or two, whether he was chatting to journalists, children or other statesmen.

This year, we’ll be running some of our favourite Madiba quotes in By The Way to remind ourselves of the great project Mandela started all those years ago and one which we must advance with our every action – a free and fully inclusive South Africa.

“To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. The true test of our devotion to freedom is just beginning.” – Nelson Mandela, Long Walk To Freedom (1994)

Erratum

In Issue 16 of By The Way, Pg19, the lead picture’s caption incorrectly identifies ‘Ivan Ellis’ as the man in the picture. The person pictured is actually Dr Cobus van Breda, Programme Director of Science-for-the- Future at the University of the Free State. Our apologies for the error. – Ed

Abusy schedule can make eating healthily difficult – sometimes impossible – which is why this month we’re in love with Munching Mongoose. This Gauteng-based service sources mouth-watering Farmer’s Market vegetables and brings them right to your door.
The way this service works is dead simple. You head over to Munching Mongoose’s site (https://www.munchingmongoose. co.za) and choose the delivery option that most suits you; there are five to choose from ranging from Mini Boxes, to Low Carb Boxes, to No Veg Boxes, for those who are just after artisanal bread, free range eggs, boutique chocolates and a selection of gourmet cheeses. Customers can even customise their orders, adding items from different boxes to their own if it’s not already included. Once that’s done, you simply set up an account; enter payment details and a delivery address (Munching Mongoose delivers to different areas on different days, so you can mark a window so you don’t miss your box) and select how many boxes you’d like a month.
What sets Munching Mongoose apart from a lot of similar services is its network of food providers and its transparency. The company has partnered with local producers of organic food from some unlikely places – from reclaimed parks and bowling greens that have been converted to inner city organic gardens, to small farmers in Muldersdrift, to artisanal food producers in the suburbs – and it’s quite happy to reveal the source of all of its food. So when you’re ordering a Munching Moose Box, you’re not only eating healthier, you’re supporting the small, local farming industry. Eat better and feel better about yourself.
