LANES REOPENED ON N1 BETWEEN COLESBERG AND HANOVER FOLLOWING HAZMAT
INCIDENT
COLESBERG, 02 July 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) confirms that the N1 national road between Colesberg and Hanover has been reopened to traffic following the successful clearance of a hazardous materials (Hazmat) incident earlier today.
This comes after a fully loaded heavy motor vehicle (HMV) overturned at kilometre 54.2 on N1 Section 11, spilling gas cylinders and prompting a full road closure due to safety risks.
Emergency services, hazardous materials units, and SANRAL response teams worked swiftly and effectively to stabilise the site, remove the vehicle and debris, and ensure the route was safe for public use.
“We are pleased to confirm that the N1 national road is once again open to all traffic. We thank motorists for their patience and understanding during the closure and commend all responders for their coordinated efforts in managing the incident safely and efficiently,” said Emile du Preez, SANRAL’s Provincial Head for the Northern Cape Province.
Motorists are advised to remain cautious and adhere to all road safety regulations as they travel through the area.
SANRAL remains committed to road user safety and will continue to monitor the area to ensure ongoing stability.
