SANRAL ADVISES ROAD USERS OF FLOOD DAMAGED ROADS IN LIMPOPO PROVINCE

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

SANRAL ADVISES ROAD USERS OF FLOOD DAMAGED ROADS IN LIMPOPO PROVINCE

Pretoria, 17 February 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises road users of flood damage caused by inclement weather conditions on some of its national road network in Limpopo Province.

“The R529 national road section between Giyani and Tzaneen, the R518 national road between Mokopane and Marken, the national road R33 between Lephalale and Vaalwater, the national road R573 between Moteti and Oorloog as well as the R524 national road between Makhado and Thohoyandou have all been affected.

“The R529 national road between Giyani and Tzaneen was damaged by heavy rains where the road crosses the Great Letaba River. The damage has resulted in a slope failure, which caused the collapse of the paved shoulder, and Armco steel pipes have been washed away, including aprons and wing walls, making the road vulnerable to collapse. SANRAL’s routine road maintenance (RRM) team, working together with local traffic enforcement, closed the road after assessing the damage. A detour has been identified to divert traffic away from the damage,” said Madoda Mthembu, SANRAL’s Provincial Manager for Limpopo Province.

“The R518 national road between Mokopane and Marken has been damaged by heavy rains and a slope failure, resulting in a landslide at the Kloof Pass. One lane at Kloof Pass has been completely blocked by material falling from the slope. The road has been closed to traffic as a precaution. Motorists travelling from Lephalale to Mokopane can use the R518 to Marken and take the R561 which links with the N11 at Baltimore and from there to Mokopane and vice versa.

Mthembu also said that the R33 national road between Lephalale and Vaalwater has been damaged by heavy rains resulting in damaged pavement and the road has been closed to traffic. Motorists travelling from Lephalale can use the R510 and join the R520 towards Vaalwater and vice versa.

The R573 national road between Moteti village and Oorloog near Siyabuswa has been damaged by heavy rains resulting in the partial collapse of the major culvert. The road is still open to traffic. Should the collapse deteriorate, the road will be closed to traffic and the only alternative is the provincial road R568 from KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga towards Siyabuswa which joins back to the R573 towards Marble Hall.

“The R524 national road between Makhado and Thohoyandou, on the other hand, is pothole ridden because of the floods damage. SANRAL is in the process of clearing water ponding on the road and fixing open potholes. This will largely depend on weather clearing up to allow for the maintenance teams to fix the potholes,” added Mthembu.

SANRAL is in discussions with the provincial and local law enforcement authorities to make road users public aware of where detours, temporary bypasses will be located, with proper signage to be erected.

SANRAL appeals to motorists to adhere to road warning signs, to reduce travel speed and drive with extreme caution in the heavy rains.

SANRAL announces toll tariff adjustment effective 1 March 2025

MEDIA RELEASE
SANRAL announces toll tariff adjustment effective 1 March 2025

Pretoria, 10 February 2024 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) hereby notifies the public of the adjustment to the toll tariffs effective from 1 March 20254.
The tariffs are adjusted annually in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as obtained from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). The annual toll tariffs will increase by 4.84%, as published in the Government Gazette of 7 February 2025. This rate is less than last year’s 6.25% adjustment.

SANRAL’s General Manager for Communications and Marketing, Vusi Mona, explained that toll revenue is necessary to maintain, operate and improve toll roads, as well as to service debt incurred to implement a toll road project.
“The funds go a long way towards ensuring that SANRAL fulfils its mandate of delivering quality road infrastructure that adds value to the lives of South African citizens,” said Mona.

He also said that key economic infrastructure, such as the national road network, is a precondition for providing basic services such as electricity, water, sanitation, telecommunications and public transport, and this road network therefore needs to meet industrial, commercial and household needs.

“SANRAL is empathetic to the South African public, considering the current state of the economy. However, it is equally important to introduce the adjustments to ensure that the agency continues to deliver safe and quality roads to the benefit of all road users,” added Mona.

Temporary Turning Restrictions at N2 Beacon Way Intersection in Plettenberg Bay

TRAFFIC ADVISORY Temporary Turning Restrictions at N2 Beacon Way Intersection in Plettenberg Bay

Western Cape, 06 February 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) would like to inform road users that there will be short term changes to the traffic flow through the construction works area at the Beacon Way Intersection on the N2 in Plettenberg Bay for a few days in the second week of February 2025.

In order for the Contractor to complete the asphalt layers around the circle and into Beacon Way, they must deviate traffic in the area around the circle and between the various newly constructed islands at the intersection.

The flow of traffic will be rerouted both out of Beacon Way and on the N2 over the next week.

In the interest of road safety, including the safety of the construction team, lane restrictions and lane rerouting will continue to be implemented at this intersection. Traffic coming out of Beacon Way will NOT be able to turn right and will be directed up to the circle at Shell for a few hours on TWO of next week’s days.

Similarly, motorists coming from Knysna and turning into Beacon Way will NOT be able to turn right into Beacon Way and will be directed along to the Old Nick / Keurbooms caravan park intersection or beyond for a few hours on TWO of next week’s days.

Due to the above conditions, motorists are requested to plan their trips accordingly and use alternative routes wherever possible.

Alternative Routes

• Road users going to Plettenberg Bay from Knysna should use the Marine Way entrance to move in and out.

• All road users leaving Plett, going to the malls in Beacon Way or moving in and out of Poortjies should use Bowtie or other routes to get onto the N2.

• Heavy motor vehicles that supply the mall in Beacon Way should use Marine Drive for deliveries.

All road users are requested to be mindful of the impact of the construction, to reduce speed, and to obey temporary and permanent signage when travelling through the construction area. SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused.

For lane closures and shoulder closures on the N2 Section 11 from Linton Grange Interchange to St Albans Interchange

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

For lane closures and shoulder closures on the N2 Section 11 from Linton Grange Interchange to St Albans Interchange

Eastern Cape, 04 FEBRUARY  2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises road users that lane closures and shoulder closures will be implemented on the N2 Section 11, from the Linton Grange Interchange to St Albans Interchange, where the project is currently underway.

The effective date is from 04 February 2025 until 28 February 2025.

There will be a minimum of three lane closures within a 24-hour period, for km19.4 to km22.8 on the West Bound Fast Lane, km12.8 to km16.6 West Bound Fast Lane, and km12.8 to km16.6 East Bound slow lane.

Additionally, there will be daytime moving closure; East Bound Fast and Slow Lane, km8 to 12.6, and West Bound Fast Lane km 8 to12.6.

Motorists can expect minimal delays, due to the required reduction in traveling speed to ensure safety.

Motorists can expect the movement of construction plant along the closures.

“The extensive scope of this project includes texture correction, rut corrections, in-situ recycling of base using bituminous emulsion, base patches, and resealing existing road surface. Although these activities may result in temporary inconveniences, the substantial long-term benefits primarily revolve around preserving infrastructure. The preservation and improvement of road infrastructure not only guarantees smoother travel experiences but also play a crucial role in enhancing the economic and social well-being of the community,” said Mbulelo Peterson, SANRAL Southern Region’s Regional Manager.

SANRAL appeals to motorists to adhere to the warning signs, to reduce speed when approaching the construction zones and to plan their trips accordingly.

SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused.

  • Closure 5: From 14:00, Saturday 08 March 2025 to 02:00, Monday 10 March 2025 reserved date,

Please take note that the remainder of the EB Cloete Interchange will remain fully open to traffic.

When traveling on the N3 Eastbound from Pinetown and intending to proceed to the N2 Southbound towards Amanzimtoti, the following alternative route is recommended:

  • Continue on the N3 Eastbound towards Sherwood Interchange.
  • Take the off ramp.
  • Turn right onto Jan Smuts Highway (M13).
  • Turn right back onto N3 Eastbound.
  • On approaching EB Cloete Interchange take the offramp to the N2 Southbound (towards Amanzimtoti).

“To ensure safety for both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans are in place, with signage, barriers, and traffic-calming measures already installed.

“Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to delay trips over these times or use staging areas to minimize congestion. Public transport operators should ensure drivers are aware of route closures and alternative routes affecting their schedules. Light vehicles and emergency services are encouraged to utilize alternative routes,” added Roux.

A detailed alternative route guide is included below and can be found on this link: https://www.nra.co.za/project-n2n3-upgrades?region_id=eastern

All road users are strongly advised to plan routes in advance and leave for destinations earlier than usual to avoid delays.

SANRAL appeals to road users to note and comply with the advance warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling past the construction work zones. To prioritise the safety of both the construction workers and road users, the speed limit along the route is reduced during construction.
