For lane closures and shoulder closures on the N2 Section 11 from Linton Grange Interchange to St Albans Interchange

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

For lane closures and shoulder closures on the N2 Section 11 from Linton Grange Interchange to St Albans Interchange

Eastern Cape, 28 FEBRUARY 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises road users that lane closures and shoulder closures will be implemented on the N2 Section 11, from the Linton Grange Interchange to St Albans Interchange, where the project is currently underway.

The effective date is from 25 February 2025 until 15 March 2025.

There will be a minimum of two lane closures within a 24-hour period, for km16.6 to km19.5 on the East Bound slow Lane, and km19.5 to km16.6 on the West Bound slow Lane.

Additionally, there will be a daytime Shoulder closure for km8 to km16 East Bound.

Motorists can expect minimal delays, due to the required reduction in traveling speed to ensure safety.

Motorists can expect the movement of construction plant along the closures.

“The extensive scope of this project includes texture correction, rut corrections, in-situ recycling of base using bituminous emulsion, base patches, and resealing existing road surface. Although these activities may result in temporary inconveniences, the substantial long-term benefits primarily revolve around preserving infrastructure. The preservation and improvement of road infrastructure not only guarantees smoother travel experiences but also play a crucial role in enhancing the economic and social well-being of the community,” said Kayakazi Mafuta, SANRAL Eastern Cape’s Acting Provincial Head.

SANRAL appeals to motorists to adhere to the warning signs, to reduce speed when approaching the construction zones and to plan their trips accordingly.

SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused.

SANRAL ADVISES ROAD USERS OF ROAD FAILURE ON R61 NATIONAL ROAD BETWEEN MAGUSHENI AND MZAMBA

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

SANRAL ADVISES ROAD USERS OF ROAD FAILURE ON R61 NATIONAL ROAD BETWEEN
MAGUSHENI AND MZAMBA

Eastern Cape, 26 February 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises road users of a road failure which occurred this morning (Wednesday) on the R61 national road between Magusheni and Mzamba in the Eastern Cape Province.

The failure was caused by flood damage, which is a result of inclement weather conditions in the area.

“SANRAL’s Road Routine Maintenance (RRM) team has swiftly responded to the failure; the road has been barricaded and the RRM team erected a manual STOP-and-Go sign. Our contractor is in the process of organising automated traffic lights for the stop-and-go.”

“The road failure was identified by SANRAL’s Eastern Cape Provincial Manager, Mr Mbulelo Simon Peterson, who was travelling in the area. He confirmed that the failure was caused by runoff water that crossed the road and overwhelmed the earth side drains. This resulted in scouring and the collapse of a section of the road. Fortunately, it has been determined that the issue is not a sinkhole but a significant washaway due to the volume of water,” said Kayakazi Mafuta, SANRAL’s Acting Provincial Head for the Eastern Cape Province.

The RRM team is currently on site to assist with placing new jersey barriers to further secure the damaged section of the road. A geotechnical team, led by SANRAL’s Project Manager Thabo Jaxa, is also on its way to do its assessment and support the RRM team with necessary repairs.

SANRAL urges all motorists to exercise caution when approaching the area and adhere to the stop-and-go system to ensure everyone’s safety. SANRAL apologises for the inconvenience that this may have caused and will continue to give an update on repairs that are being done.

SANRAL, BELL MOU BENEFITS N2 WILD COAST ROAD PROJECT LOCAL COMMUNITY

MEDIA RELEASE

SANRAL, BELL MOU BENEFITS N2 WILD COAST ROAD PROJECT LOCAL COMMUNITY

Masakhane Group Managing Director Ayanda Notshweleka with some of the local beneficiaries who will benefit from the signed MoU between SANRAL and Bell Equipment

Eastern Cape, 26 February 2024 – The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) and BELL Equipment will go a long way in improving the socio-economic conditions of communities who live alongside SANRAL’s N2 Wild Coast Road Project in the Eastern Cape, said Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Xolile Nqatha.

Speaking at the official handover of construction machinery and equipment to the Masakhane Group at the Dudumeni Quarry in the Winne Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality, Nqatha said the initiative speaks to government’s ongoing commitment to bring economic value to local communities in major infrastructure development projects.

“As government, we fully support today’s (Wednesday) handover as it will play an important role in our ongoing efforts to reverse inequality in the N2 Wild Coast Road Programme, and thereby tackling the triple challenges of unemployment, inequality, and poverty. We need to work together and strive to prosper in our efforts to uplift each other in order bring about change and development to our communities,” said Nqatha.

The handover is a culmination of the MoU that SANRAL signed with BELL Equipment in July 2018. Through the MoU, a direct development support structure for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) will be established, and local emerging contractors will be provided technical support as well as access to existing and potential markets in the road construction industry.

SMMEs will be given access to training and development programmes and basic information such as tender clarification meetings that are provided by SANRAL.

According to Ayanda Notshweleka, the Managing Director of the Masakhane Group, the MoU will help the company in participating and collaborating with SANRAL in construction sub-contracting as well as supplying of materials such as aggregates.

“We have received a set of crushing units from BELL which we are going to use to supply on some of SANRAL’s contracts, and we appreciate and welcome SANRAL’s commitment to development and transformation in the construction industry. Quarries are one of the key areas that address transformation initiatives, and through today’s handover, we will be able to supply aggregates to contracts that come into this region.”

“Beyond aggregates, we are also going to be in the manufacturing of ready-mix concrete and block-paving bricks. As a local business, working together with the Wild Coast Corridor Business Chamber, this is a great milestone for us and a wonderful commitment that we welcome from SANRAL. We look forward to seeing such agreements and initiatives also going to other SMMEs in the area,” he said.

Through its Transformation Policy, SANRAL seeks to increase the number of black participants across the value and supply chain of the road construction sub-sector of the construction industry, as well as promote fair competition in this sub-sector.

The roads agency continues to provide support to SMMEs through structured programmes and partnerships with industry players to ensure their meaningful participation and growth in the construction industry.

Pretoria, 21 February 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises road users of a road closure caused by flood damage on the R40 national road between White River and Hazyview in Mpumalanga Province. The closure is caused by recent inclement weather conditions in the province.

“The closure of the R40 national road is caused by a slip on the road, which is a hazard for motorists. We have barricaded the area with heavy delineators as temporary measures to make the road safe. Concrete barriers will be used to barricade the road before the end of the week. Full Road Closure to accommodate relocation of Eskom power lines on the N3 between Key Ridge and Hammarsdale Interchange

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

Full Road Closure to accommodate relocation of Eskom power lines on the N3 between Key Ridge and Hammarsdale Interchange

Durban, 20 February 2025 – The N3 national road will be fully closed on Sunday, 09 March 2025, between the hours of 08h45 and 11h00, to allow the relocation of Eskom Lines on the N3 between Key Ridge and the Hammarsdale Interchange to happen. This relocation is part of the N3 Section 2 Realignment Project, the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has announced.

The closure will take place between the M13/N3 split and the Hammarsdale Interchange. A closure will also be necessary on the Peacevale on-ramp to the N3 Southbound.

“Working together with the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and the Durban Metro Police, our traffic accommodation team, will manage and monitor the diversion of traffic” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s Eastern Region Specialist Geometrics Engineer.

The details are of the lane closure are as follows:

Sunday, 09 March 2025

08:45 to 9:00 – Close the N3 and the Peacevale on-ramp southbound.
09:00 to 10:45 – Relocation of Eskom Lines.
10:45 to 11:00 – Reopen N3 and the Peacevale on-ramp southbound for all vehicles.

The R103 will be available as an alternative route during the blast. Substantial delays are, however, likely as the R103 is unable to handle the same volume of traffic as the N3.

The closure may need to be adjusted depending on the weather conditions on the day. If that happens, a second notice with information about the new time will be issued.

“We understand the disruption this closure will have, and that is why we have planned it for when traffic volumes are at their lowest. Nevertheless, there will likely be delays so we ask motorists to delay their trips or avoid traveling if possible, to be patient on the road, and use alternative routes if possible,” added Lowe. SANRAL apologises to road users for the inconvenience caused and thanks them for their patience during the ongoing N3 road upgrades.
