TRAFFIC ADVISORY

Planned Closure of Pomona On / Off Ramp for Road Rehabilitation Work on National Route R21
Section 1

Pretoria, 23 May 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to
inform road users of the planned temporary closure of the on-ramp and off-ramps at the Pomona
Interchange on the R21 Freeway as part of its ongoing road rehabilitation project. The closures for the
northbound on-ramp and southbound off-ramp are scheduled for Sunday the 25th of May and Sunday
the 8th of June, respectively, to facilitate the milling and replacement of the asphalt surfacing.

The details of the closures are as follows:

  • Northbound on-ramp – Sunday 25th of May from 06:00 to 12:00 (Detour route M32 / R23)
  • Southbound off-ramp – Sunday 08th of June from 06:00 to 12:00 (Detour route R23 / Benoni)

“This essential maintenance work is required to ensure the safety and longevity of the road
infrastructure. Due to the narrow width of the ramp, a full closure is necessary to carry out the
resurfacing effectively.”.

“To accommodate road users during the closure, a detour route will be clearly signposted. Flag persons
will be stationed at strategic positions along the detour to assist and guide drivers safely through the
alternative path,” said Progress Hlahla, SANRAL’s Provincial Head for the Gauteng province.

SANRAL urges road users to:

  • Plan their trips in advance and allow extra travel time to account for the detour.
  • Follow the detour signs and adhere to the instructions provided by the flag persons, and
  • Exercise patience and caution while navigating the affected area.

The maintenance work is expected to be completed over the course of two days over consecutive
weekends. However, road users are encouraged to check the SANRAL website for any updates or
changes to the schedule.

SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and remains committed to improving the safety
and quality of our national roads.
