Upgrades along the N2 and N3 form part of national government’s key Strategic Integrated Projects. The upgrades include widening the N2 and N3 to four or five lanes in each direction, and reconfiguration of most major interchanges. These are expected to take 8–10 years to complete, and have been split into a number of detailed design and construction packages. The total estimated construction cost for these upgrades is approximately R14 billion for the N2, and R21 billion for the N3. These two highways are also at the forefront of SANRAL’s flood damage repair work.
