Upcoming road closures to accommodate repair works on N3 Townhill

Pietermaritzburg, 24 March 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises motorists of upcoming road closures for essential repair work on deformed road sections along the N3 Town Hill, near the Peter Brown Drive Interchange. Repairs on the slow lane of national route N3, section 3, between Sanctuary Road (km 15.2) and Link Road (km 21.2), will commence on 24 March 2025.

“Essential repairs will be undertaken on both the northbound and southbound carriageways to improve road safety and durability. On the northbound carriageway, repairs will extend from the Peter Brown overpass bridge to the transition point where the slow lane’s asphalt section ends, meeting the concrete section. On the southbound carriageway, a 240-meter stretch will be repaired from the Peter Brown offramp to near the interchange overpass bridge.” said SANRAL Project Manager, Thabiso Dladla.

Traffic Impact & Alternative Routes

To facilitate the repair work, the slow lanes in the affected sections will be restricted to two lanes during the daytime. Vehicles exceeding 8 tons are strictly prohibited from using the R103. For light motor vehicles, an alternative route is available:

Old Howick Road (R103): While not deemed necessary, motorists traveling to and from Durban may opt for this route if required.

“SANRAL urges all motorists to plan their trips accordingly and exercise patience during these critical repairs. Your cooperation ensures the success of these road safety enhancements” said Dladla.
