TEMPORARY RAMP CLOSURES ON N2/N3 EB CLOETE INTERCHANGE

Durban, 01 September 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises motorists of the upcoming temporary closures of some of the ramps at EB Cloete Interchange. These closures are required to facilitate excavation and foundational works beneath the ramps, as part of the ongoing EB Cloete Interchange upgrade project.

The closures will take place over four separate weekends, with each scheduled from Saturday evening to early Monday morning to minimise weekday traffic disruption.

“These works are part of the broader improvements to the Interchange. The temporary closures are necessary to accommodate construction activity in a safe and controlled manner,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KwaZulu Natal Specialist Geometrics Engineer.

  • Closure 1:
  • N2 Northbound to N3 Eastbound (from Amanzimtoti to Durban CBD): Closed from 18:00, Saturday 06 September 2025 to 04:00, Monday 08 September 2025
  • N2 Northbound to N3 Westbound (from Amanzimtoti to Pietermaritzburg): Closed from 22:00, Saturday 06 September 2025 to 06:00, Sunday 07 September 2025
  • Closure 2:
  • N2 Southbound to N3 Westbound (from Umhlanga to Pietermaritzburg): Closed from 18:00, Saturday 13 September 2025 to 04:00, Monday 15 September 2025
  • Closure 3:
  • N2 Northbound to N3 Eastbound (from Amanzimtoti to Durban CBD): Closed from 18:00, Saturday 20 September 2025 to 04:00, Monday 22 September 2025
  • Closure 4:
  • N2 Southbound to N3 Westbound (from Umhlanga to Pietermaritzburg): Closed from 18:00, Saturday 04 October 2025 to 04:00, Monday 06 October 2025

This initiative forms part of SANRAL’s continuous efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and improve traffic infrastructure along both the N2 and N3 corridors.

As required for the safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place. All motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow for additional travel time, and adhere to posted signage and reduced speed limits within construction zones.

Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period and/or find suitable staging areas over this timeframe to avoid major congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes.

To prioritise the safety of both the construction workers and road users, the speed limit along the route is reduced during construction.” Said Lowe.

  • Keep left on-ramp towards Pietermaritzburg
  • Take St James Road off-ramp
  • Turn right toward Westville
  • Turn left onto the loop to merge with N3 towards Durban

  • Via Umgeni Road Interchange
