TEMPORARY RAMP CLOSURE ON EB CLOETE INTERCHANGE – N2 NORTHBOUND TO N3 EASTBOUND (FROM AMANZIMTOTI TO DURBAN CBD)

Durban, 6 October 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises motorists of the upcoming temporary closure of the N2 Amanzimtoti to N3 Durban CBD ramp at the EB Cloete Interchange. This closure is required to facilitate underground excavation and foundational works beneath the ramps, as part of the ongoing EB Cloete Interchange upgrade project.

“These works are part of the broader improvements to the Interchange. The temporary closure is necessary to accommodate construction activity in a safe and controlled manner,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KwaZulu Natal Specialist Geometrics Engineer.

Scheduled ramp closure:

  • N2 Northbound to N3 Eastbound (from Amanzimtoti to Durban CBD): Closed from 18:00, Saturday 11 October 2025 to 04:00, Monday 13 October 2025

This initiative forms part of SANRAL’s continuous efforts to enhance pedestrian safety and improve traffic infrastructure along both the N2 and N3 corridors.

As required for the safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place. All motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow for additional travel time, and adhere to posted signage and reduced speed limits within construction zones.

Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period and/or find suitable staging areas over this timeframe to avoid major congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes.

“SANRAL appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as it undertakes this vital project to alleviate long-term traffic congestion in the area and appeal to road users to note and comply with the advance warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling past the construction work zones. To prioritise the safety of both the construction workers and road users, the speed limit along the route is reduced during construction,” said Lowe.

The following alternative route is provided for the closures affecting the N2 Northbound to N3 Eastbound (from Amanzimtoti to Durban CBD) as follows:

  • From 18:00, Saturday 11 October 2025 to 04:00, Monday 13 October 2025

Locally

  • Take N2 off-ramp
  • Keep left on-ramp towards Pietermaritzburg
  • Take St James Road off-ramp
  • Turn right toward Westville
  • Turn left onto the loop to merge with N3 towards Durban

  • Via M7 Edwin Swales Drive
  • Via Umgeni Road Interchange
