SANRAL expresses condolences to lives lost on R21 bus crash
PRETORIA, 11 March 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) wishes to express its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in a devastating bus crash on the R21 this morning.
The incident happened at about 6:45 am, causing major traffic congestion on the lane heading towards the O.R. Tambo International Airport. At some stage, the lane had to be closed as emergency services were attending to the scene. The number of those who perished has been confirmed as currently standing at 16 and those injured at 45.
“The R21 is a major corridor, and which has been safely engineered. At this stage we do not know what caused the incident and will await the necessary investigations to be carried out by the relevant organs of state. SANRAL will cooperate with such investigations by making all information available at its disposal. We commiserate with the bereaved families and wish the hospitalised a speedy recovery,” said Progress Hlahla, the Head of SANRAL in Gauteng.
The road was opened at about 3 pm and traffic is now flowing.
