N3 TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES TO ACCOMMODATE DEMOLITION OF THE OLD CANDELLA ROAD BRIDGE.

Durban, 28 January 2026 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises motorists on temporary road closures on the N3 to accommodate the demolition of the old Candella Road Bridge.

“This closure is part of the ongoing upgrade of the EB Cloete Interchange and surrounding road and bridges. Where municipal roads such as Candella Road are affected by the N2 or N3 upgrades, the affected portions are built to match the cities future planning, i.e. additional width or lanes are provided,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer.

SANRAL appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as it undertakes this vital project to alleviate long term traffic congestion in the area.

The temporary road closures will take place as follows:

  • N3 Eastbound and Westbound Carriageways:
  • – Both carriageways will be fully closed between the EB Cloete Interchange (aka Spaghetti Junction) and Sherwood Interchange from 18:00 on Saturday, 14 February 2026 to 04:00 on Monday, 16 February 2026

Note that the N2 remains fully open as does the N3 on the inland side of the EB Cloete Interchange (aka Spaghetti Junction).

As required for the safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans will be in place.

Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period, find suitable staging areas or reroute using the alternative route options to avoid major congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes.

All road-users are advised to plan their routes ahead of time and where possible leave for destinations earlier than usual.

CLOSURE LOCATIONS:

N3 at Sherwood Interchange:

  • N3 Westbound (from Durban to Pinetown) – carriageway fully closed. Vehicles can only proceed down Sherwood Interchange off ramp.
  • Sherwood Westbound on ramp to the N3 (Sherwood/Cato Manor to Pinetown) – ramp fully closed. Vehicles can only proceed along the M13 King Cetshwayo Highway or to N3 Eastbound.

 

 

Closures at EB Cloete (aka Spaghetti Junction) N3/N2 Interchange:

  • N2 Southbound Ramp to N3 Eastbound (King Shaka International Airport to Durban) – ramp fully closed. Vehicles can only proceed to the N2 South or N3 West.
  • N3 Eastbound (Pinetown to Durban) – carriageway fully closed. Vehicles can only proceed to N2 North (Umhlanga/King Shaka International Airport) or South (Amanzimtoti).
  • N2 Northbound Ramp to N3 Eastbound (Amanzimtoti to Durban) – ramp fully closed. Vehicles can only proceed to the N2 North or N3 West.

“SANRAL appeals to road users to note and comply with the advance warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling past the construction work zones. To prioritise the safety of both the construction workers and road users, the speed limit along the route is reduced during construction,” added Lowe.
