TEMPORARY NORTH BOUND ROAD CLOSURES ON LYELL STREET, N11 SECTION 2

Ladysmith, 29 October 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to advise motorists of the upcoming temporary closure of Lyell Street, N11 Section 2 (km 3+948 to km 4+228) northbound only, between the Queen Street and Alfred Street intersections.

These works form part of the broader N11-2 upgrade project (km 0.000 to km 28+000) aimed at improving traffic flow and safety along this key corridor. The temporary full road closure is necessary to accommodate construction activity in a safe and controlled environment.

“This closure is necessary to enable the construction of a Junction Control Point (JCP) within the town. Given the limited workspace, closing the northbound carriageway is the safest and most practical option to protect both road users and construction personnel, said SANRAL’s KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Project Manager, Ayanda Chagwe.

SCHEDULED ROAD CLOSURE

  • Route: Lyell Street, N11 Section 2 (km 3+948 to km 4+228) – Northbound only
  • Between: Queen Street intersection and Alfred Street intersection
  • Duration: From Tuesday, 4 November 2025 at 08:00 to Saturday, 6 December 2025 at 14:00

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

For traffic from Colenso/R103 (affected direction):

  • Turn left at the Lyell and Murchison intersection
  • Continue straight until Alfred Street
  • Turn right at Alfred Street
  • Turn left to rejoin N11/Lyell Street

For traffic from Town/Newcastle (unaffected direction):

  • Continue straight along N11/Lyell Street

As part of the safety measures for both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place throughout the construction period. Motorists are advised to plan their trips accordingly, allow extra travel time, and adhere to all posted signage and speed restrictions. Truck and heavy vehicle operators are encouraged to make use of alternative routes to minimise congestion and delays. Public transport operators are also urged to ensure their drivers are informed of the closure and the available detour routes affecting commuter travel.

SANRAL appeals to all road users to note and comply with advance warning signs and speed restrictions when travelling through or near construction zones. The speed limit along the route will be temporarily reduced to ensure the safety of both workers and motorists.

“We are committed to completing this section of work safely and efficiently while minimising disruption to road users. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of all motorists as we undertake these essential improvements to enhance mobility and safety within the Ladysmith area,” said Chagwe.
