ROAD CLOSURE NOTIFICATION OF SPECIAL MAINTENANCE PROJECT ON R27 NATIONAL ROAD FROM NORTHERN AND WESTERN CAPE BORDER TO CALVINIA
Northern Cape, 26 August 2025 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) confirms the recent start of the special maintenance project on the R27 national road from the Northern Cape and Western Cape border (km41.12) to Calvinia (km 69.82). Progress is notable, with road closures underway.
“As part of the special maintenance project on National Route R27 Section 7 and 8 and repair the Vanrhyns Pass from (km 42.6 to km 41.0), the scope of works to be undertaken include consolidation and base repair, asphalt overlay, guardrail removal and installation, removal and installation of permanent signage, subsoils, and kerbing. This work is expected to continue over the next four weeks. Additionally, a 24-hour Stop and Go will be erected for the execution of all works,” said Ulrich Witbooi, SANRAL’s Project Manager.
All public vehicles will be stopped at both the bottom and top of the Vanrhyns Pass and escorted with a designated traffic safety escort vehicle. The expected minimum waiting period is approximately 45 minutes.
Stop & Go 1: Top of Vanrhyns Pass (Niewoudtville)
Stop & Go 2: Bottom of Vanrhyns Pass (rest area)
The Vanrhyns Pass will be opened to the public on 28th of August at 17h00 to avoid any delays for those travelling over the weekend to and from the Hantam Vleisfees, as well as flower viewers. All public road users are to expect no delays during this period. The Stop and Go will only be re-erected on the morning of Tuesday, the 2nd of September, for all work to continue.
To minimise disruption, a traffic safety vehicle will be made available to escort all public vehicles throughout the Stop & Go operation for the duration of all works. Preference will be given to heavy motor vehicles passing through.
“We urge road users to exercise caution, reduce speed, adhere to warning signs within the construction area and always remain vigilant for road construction workers,” added Witbooi.
SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused by these necessary upgrades. These short-term disruptions are, however, vital for long-term road safety enhancements that will benefit all road users.
