TRAFFIC ADVISORY
TEMPORARY LANE CLOSURES ON N1 FOR OVERHEAD SIGN REPLACEMENT NEAR RIGEL OFF-RAMP
Gauteng 8 August – The South African National Roads Agency Soc Limited (SANRAL) wishes to inform road users of planned traffic disruptions on the N1 national road Section 21 Southbound due to the replacement of an overhead gantry sign.
The details of the closure are as follows:
Date: 10 August 2025 (Sunday)
Location: km 26.6 just before the Rigel off-ramp in the southbound direction (From Atterbury towards Rigel)
Time: 09:00 – 15:00
“This forms part of SANRAL’s ongoing project to replace aging overhead signs along national routes. Many of these signs have faded over time and no longer meet the required standards for nighttime visibility and reflectivity. The initiative aims to improve road safety and visibility for all road users,” said Progress Hlahla, SANRAL’s Provincial Head for the Gauteng Province.
“To safely carry out the replacement, all main lanes on the southbound carriageway will be temporarily closed, with traffic diverted to the emergency slow lane. Motorists are advised to expect delays during this time. Alternative routes will be clearly marked from Atterbury Road, directing motorists from Atterbury Road to Rigel on-ramp, where they can rejoin the N1 freeway at Rigel Avenue. Alternative routes will be clearly marked from Atterbury Road, directing motorists from Atterbury Road to Rigel on-ramp, where they can rejoin the N1 freeway at Rigel Avenue,” added Hlahla.
SANRAL urges all road users to:
- Plan their trips accordingly.
- Adhere to the traffic accommodation signage and the flag persons advanced warnings, and
- Exercise patience and caution while navigating the affected area.
SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and the roads agency remains committed to improving the safety and quality of our national roads.
