SANRAL ENGAGES SMMES ON UPCOMING N1 AND N3 PROJECTS IN JOHANNESBURG
Pretoria, 23 March 2025 – In a significant move towards fostering economic growth and empowerment, the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL), in partnership with the City of Johannesburg, hosted an impactful stakeholder engagement session on Thursday, 20 March at the Roodepoort City Hall. This engagement, titled Taking SANRAL to the People, served as a platform to introduce SANRAL’s upcoming infrastructure projects on the N1 and N3 national roads, unpack subcontracting and job opportunities, and provide updates on routine road maintenance (RRM) projects in the city.
This initiative is part of SANRAL’s broader commitment to ensuring inclusivity and transparency in the implementation of its projects. The session, which was attended by a large number of SMMEs, local labourers, and community representatives, provided an opportunity for direct engagement between SANRAL officials and key stakeholders such as the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), who play a crucial role in the country’s infrastructure development.
During the session, SANRAL’s Provincial Head, Progress Hlahla, presented an overview of major projects that form part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Programme (GFIP). These projects include the resurfacing of the N3 between Geldenhuys and Buccleuch interchanges, which was recently awarded for construction, will enhance the capacity and efficiency of the N1 and N3 national roads, contributing to improved mobility and economic development in Gauteng.
“This session is a vital step in ensuring that local businesses and communities are aware of the opportunities available within SANRAL’s infrastructure projects. Our goal is to create an inclusive and fair environment where emerging businesses, particularly those owned by historically disadvantaged individuals, can access economic opportunities arising from our projects.” said Hlahla.
“SANRAL remains committed to its transformation agenda, which prioritises the empowerment of SMMEs, youth-owned enterprises, women-owned businesses, and previously marginalised contractors. By engaging directly with these stakeholders, SANRAL aims to facilitate a better understanding of the subcontracting process, compliance requirements, and the necessary steps to secure work on upcoming projects,” added Hlahla.
The session also provided a platform for SMMEs to raise their concerns, ask questions, and seek clarification on various aspects of project participation. Some of the key issues discussed included the tendering process and how SMMEs can position
themselves to secure work within SANRAL projects, compliance requirements and support mechanisms available to small businesses.
As part of its continued efforts, SANRAL will host similar engagements in other provinces to ensure that all affected stakeholders have access to relevant project information and economic opportunities.
SANRAL encourages all SMMEs, contractors, and stakeholders to stay informed about upcoming opportunities by visiting SANRAL’s website on www.nra.co.za
