Low level airborne survey

SANRAL recently finished a low-level airborne geophysical survey of the N2 Wild Coast road from Port St Johns to Port Edward in the Eastern Cape.

The roads agency printed 500 pamphlets and held briefing sessions with the Mbizana and Ingquza Hill Local Municipality authorities, traditional leaders, Project Liaison Committees (PLCs) and Project Liaison Officers (PLOs) of the project to explain what the survey entails. On 18 January, information leaflets were issued to the Mbizana and Ingquza Hill local municipalities.

Pamphlets were also placed on notice boards on January 21, as well as distributed to Project Liaison Committees (PLCs) and Project Liaison Officers (PLOs), and Ward Councillors on 21st and 22nd January.

A specially equipped helicopter was seen flying at low level over the designated area, avoiding built-up ones. It took images of underground conditions. A device was connected to the helicopter and used electromagnetic fields to show where underground features such as groundwater, rock formation and voids in the earth can be found.
