Progress on Community Development Programme

Three community development projects have been completed in the past year in Mbizana, Ingquza Hill and Port St Johns local municipalities where community access roads were built to improve accessibility to essential amenities such as schools and clinics. These were in Mzamba, Lusikisiki and Ndwalane respectively. In Port St Johns and Mzamba, a local community hall was also renovated.

The projects were undertaken by 31 Grade 1, 2 & 3 SMMEs drawn from surrounding local communities. They completed the initial theoretical accredited training and mentoring experience in construction of local access roads before constructing the actual roads. The projects were valued at R122m, of which over 85% was allocated to SMMEs. All of the SMMEs grew at least one grade, many grew two grades and one Grade 1 firm in Lusikisiki managed to grow to a remarkable grade 5 over the course of the project by developing a precast concrete kerb manufacturing branch.

A further two community development projects are currently underway along the N2 Wild Coast Road (N2WCR). One is a community access road from Mahaha to Sigidi village in Mbizana Local

Municipality. This 45 million-rand project commenced in January 2018 and will continue between 24 months. Ten local SMMEs, ranging between Grade 1 to 3 Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), are undergoing theoretical training and practical simulation and begin with the road construction in early March 2019.
