SANRAL has taken far-reaching steps to protect the
environment in the parts of the Eastern Cape affected by
the construction of the N2 Wild Coast Road.
As the project moved towards the construction phase,
issues relating to environmental management remained
high on SANRAL’s agenda. The responsible management
of the environment is a key element of the success and
sustainability of this road.
Among the priorities is to ensure that the construction
activities have a minimal impact on the environment
and that animal and plant life along the Wild Coast are
well-protected.
All the required permits relating to the protection of
plants, the use of water and the management of heritage
issues have been granted by the relevant departments.
An environmental manager was appointed to
oversee the implementation of the project and monitor
compliance with the environmental approvals.
Two independent environmental control officers will
conduct monthly audits and draw attention to important
issues.
Site environmental control officers have been appointed
to implement measures and conduct awareness training.
An independent environmental auditor will conduct
quarterly audits and report findings to the Environmental
Monitoring Committee and the Department of
Environmental Affairs.
The contractors appointed by SANRAL have achieved
a good record of compliance with environmental
requirements. Environmental awareness training is
ongoing and the quality and flow of water in the area are
both being monitored.
Along the Mtentu and Msikaba haul roads so far, more
than 30 000 plants have been rescued.
