THERE is no denying that road infrastructure development is a key determinant of economic growth. Especially for a province that boasts the country’s largest platinum mines.
Through hard work, Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire has made it possible for the road infrastructure in the North West to be of a high standard.
Bakwena signed a concession contract with SANRAL to construct, manage, maintain and up- grade the N1 and N4 roads on 4 October 2000, and to date has successfully met and exceeded expecta- tions on these routes.
This year, Bakwena invested R1bn for maintenance and construction projects. This includes a reseal of the N4 in Dinokana by Actophambili Roads valued at R34m.
Reconstruction work to the value of R95m has been taking place on the N4 between the towns of Zeerust and Lehurutshe since February and will end in December. The contract was awarded early in 2017.
A further R250m was invested in the reconstruction of the N4 between Zeerust and Vaalkop, and an additional R7.7m for storm water upgrades.
An estimated R273m was awarded in July 2017 for road reconstruction from Vaalkop to the Groot Marico boundary.
Several other projects will receive funding, including construction between the Groot Marico boundary and Swartruggens, the expansion of the Brits and Marikana toll plazas and the construction of a third lane at Doornpoort.
According to commercial manager of Bakwena Liam Clarke, these investments are quite significant because they lead to economic growth, reduce delays and improve safety for motorists.
“Our national roads are vital to economic activity, job creation and many social benefits. Bakwena takes pride in ensuring that the roads are of good quality,” he said.
