On completing the last bit of phase 2 of the R24 project towards Rustenburg, we caught up with some of the workers putting final touches to the road. Here’s what they had to say...

Sam Timbane, general worker

“I’ve been working on this contract since the beginning. With this project, I’m able to support my two children and put them through school.”

Thomas Mbathi, general worker

“This opportunity has helped me a lot. I had been retrenched before, but because of this project, I’m no longer struggling. I am now able to support my five children.

Joseph Mamphweni, general worker

“I was unemployed before this project. I was hired and have been working on this project since 2015. I’ve gone through training and I have even received a certificate.”

We also chatted to workers who were conducting routine road maintenance in Brits along the R512. Guardrails were being ` replaced in order to improve road safety in this high-risk area. This is what they said...

Richard Mahlomola, foreman

“As a breadwinner, I am happy that I’m able to support my family. This is more than a job for me – the work we do here is saving people’s lives by keeping the road in good condition.”

Morris Maluleke, general worker

“I have been part of this project for two months. Before that I was not working. Now life is good; I have no problems any more. I’m feeling good because my family is taken care of.”
