Striking the balance

Where we build, we replant

OAKLEY VAN EYK

SANRAL came under public scrutiny for cutting down trees in Ekurhuleni. The trees were planted near the Modderfontein interchange on the R21 to OR Tambo International Airport.

As a result, the national roads agency was accused of not being considerate of the environment. In response to the people’s concerns, SANRAL explained that though the trees were removed, it was done with good reason. The pine needles which tend to block grid inlets lead to flooding on the road.

We are, in fact, always considerate of the environment when we build roads, but we also have to prioritise the safety of our road users. We cannot allow anyone to be put at risk by flooded roads. We intend to replace the pine trees (which are exotic trees) with indigenous ones such as Karee, which pose less of a risk.

Blue day for blue overalls

There’s a saying that you should never match your outfit with your fortune, because it may actually turn out to be a blue day.

Two men wearing blue overalls ran into a spot of misfortune recently, when they were arrested for stealing drain grids on the R21 southbound after Griffiths Road.

The thieves were caught on camera. Thanks to the Gauteng Traffic Management Centre (TMC), which immediately notified the Ekurhuleni Metro Police and SANRAL’s On-Road Services, the two were caught in the act.

Missing drain grids on the road are very dangerous, because they leave huge, unprotected holes on the side of the highway.

SANRAL would like to urge the public to report such incidents to help save lives.

KIDS LEARN EVERYTHING FROM YOU. SET A GOOD EXAMPLE

Kids love imitating their parents. They copy the good and the bad. It’s part of their learning process. While they may do as you say, they’re also likely to eventually do as you do.

Don’t take for granted what you do whilst driving. You know texting and driving and drinking and driving is wrong, yet you still do it. The likelihood of your child becoming an adult who texts whilst driving or drives drunk is quite high.

Exercise responsible behaviour on our roads, for your sake and theirs.

SANRAL. Save our kids, our future generation
