SANRAL brings progress to province

Future economic growth in the North West is largely dependent on the extent and quality of our road network. In my budget speech earlier this year I made a number of important announcements about the progress we are making with the construction of provincial and local roads to benefit communities living in small towns and villages.

We also published a Road Network Strategy, which sets out in great detail the province's plans to upgrade roads to higher standards of quality. Despite budget constraints, the road infrastructure that serves critical sectors of our economy – such as mining, tourism, commerce and agriculture – will remain a provincial priority.

The North West welcomes the contribution by SANRAL to plan, construct and maintain the primary network in our province. Through our partnership with SANRAL, we are jointly contributing to growth, economic transformation and the restoration of dignity to our communities.

We are especially looking forward to the planned improvements to the R52, which will have a major impact on growth in the Bojanala Platinum and Ngaka Modiri Molema districts. Once completed, this road development will greatly contribute to job creation and small business development in the province.

Similarly, an upgraded R34 will improve our linkages with neighbouring provinces and bring better mobility and safety to an important regional artery.

The North West strongly supports SANRAL's Transformation Policy and its intention to use local service providers and local labour that lives close to construction activities. This fits in well with our own commitment to increase the involvement of local people in infrastructure projects that have an impact on communities.

Together we can continue to turn our roads into important arteries that will contribute to accelerated economic development and the quality of life of the people of the North West.

We play for keeps

Our mandate is clear: we finance, improve, manage and maintain the national road network, which we view as the economic arteries of the country. We also strive to protect and preserve the environment through context- sensitive solutions. We support the development of our country's human capital through contributions to tertiary institutions and we're big fans of cooperative governance.

SANRAL embarked on an exciting journey late last year, when we took our new vision, Horizon 2030 and the Transformation Policy, on an extensive road trip to the people. In essence, that vision is about about developing the national road infrastructure to contribute to the realisation of the National Development Plan. In doing so, the agency is opening up opportunities to new and old industry players but with the aim of changing our nation's skewed past.

This edition of Hello North West highlights some of that approach.

The planned improvement of the R52 will benefit the communities of Koster and Rustenburg. The latter is already one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The project will bring jobs, skills training and opportunities for local businesses.

We also take a look at the upgraded R34 and the benefits it has already brought to so many who live along it.

What these two projects highlight is that the national roads agency steps in when provincial authorities ask for assistance. This points to a perennial problem – which is not unusual in a developing country – where must the money come from to maintain and upgrade existing roads and add new ones where they are needed?

It is an issue with which we are constantly grappling – and we are relooking our funding model.

Taking our new vision to communities is one thing but seeing how Horizon 2030 actually does transform the lives of real people is quite amazing. For a taste of what is happening wherever we go, turn to page 6, where Thabo Mahlakwana tells us how lives are changed. SANRAL has improved the lives of communities, created jobs and upskilled local people so that they have something to fall back on once a SANRAL project has been completed.

This year, SANRAL is 20 years old and we are celebrating by keeping up the quality of our roads and by transforming our industry – while touching lives. SANRAL is committed to implementing community projects to ensure impactful relevance. Road safety is a key focus at the agency to improve the safety performance of national roads.

Apart from highlighting the projects we are most proud of in the province, in this edition of Hello North West we also welcome our new Northern Region Manager, Progress Hlahla. Let's keep growing together.
