Twenty years ago, SANRAL was established with a mandate to finance, improve, manage, maintain and upgrade the national road network. Every day, the agency fulfils that mandate without question. Two decades later, SANRAL has gone beyond this basic mission by making investments in human capital aimed at enhancing the future of this country.
The agency has made substantial contributions to education, research and the youth to ensure a brighter future for all. To highlight these investments, SANRAL’s first research and education coffee table book was published.
Road to Success is not just lovely to look at; it is a celebration of the men, women and youth who strive to serve our country and its people through education and research.
Road to Success features stories of
ordinary South Africans whose lives have been transformed through the interventions made by SANRAL. You will find the voices of students who have been given opportunities to achieve their dreams, professionals who were able to progress in their careers because of the support the agency provided.
Compiling such an impressive book was no small task. Last year, the agency’s publications team embarked on journey across the country with a video crew, writers and photographers to interview the professors, doctors, programme leaders, interns, learners and students who were making their way on the road to success – thanks to SANRAL.
The team interacted with the beneficiaries, the SANRAL Chairs from the University of Stellenbosch, the University of Cape Town and the University of the Free State, along with programme directors of various institutions,
in order to get a true sense of SANRAL’s contribution to research and education. Not only were they the true contributors to the book; they are the reason for SANRAL’s investment in the first place.
To supplement the stories captured by the writers in the coffee table book, and to depict the depth of the relationship formed between the contributors and the national roads agency, 11 videos were produced. These can be viewed on SANRAL’s social media pages.
Even though months of travel, writing, interviews, filming and rewriting went into compiling Road to Success, it cannot compare to the amount of time these contributors and the agency have invested in education and research.
This book is hard evidence of how SANRAL is advancing South Africa’s future through perceptive investment along South Africa’s own road to success.

eing a highly adventurous
woman with an inquisitive mind,
Mantlhake Julia Maboya was
motivated to venture into demanding
fields and was determined to prove
that with excellent teachers, these
subjects were attainable.
Maboya reached a significant
milestone when she qualified as the
first black female with a doctorate
in mathematics education from the
University of Free State, which was
made possible by funding from the
SANRAL Chair.
Her groundbreaking research was
the first to examine the need for and
utility of mathematical labs at schools.
The theoretical framework that
grounded her studies guided her
to listen to teachers’ opinions and
to adopt a dialectical approach to
interventions that claim to transform
teaching practices and empower
educators.
Among her career highlights were
being awarded a scholarship by the
British Council to pursue a Master’s
degree in mathematics education in
England and the conceptualisation
and initiation of a maths laboratory
project that promotes hands-on
experience in the teaching and
learning of mathematics in the Free
State.
She has also led the Provincial
Strategy on Learner Attainment team
that saw the Free State becoming
the top-performing province in South
Africa, and she directed the South
African delegation to the United
Kingdom and France on a fact-finding
mission on vocational education,
publishing a concept paper on
vocational education.
Her passion and commitment
to her work, actively listening to
others, taking every experience as an
opportunity to learn, taking calculated
risks, creativity and innovation are
among the personality traits that
make Maboya a brilliant resource for
curriculum management.
