I joined the company in 2006 and we’ve worked on different projects over the years, but none as big as this one. This project will help broaden my skills and deepen my knowledge, due to its size. Not only will the participating companies benefit but the community will reap some rewards as well.”
I’ve been in the construction industry for 18 years, 13 of which I’ve spent with the main contractor on this project [KPMM]. My company supplies cement for the project. This is by far the biggest project I’ve worked on. I encourage women to learn about the industry and get involved with the technicalities of the business. They shouldn’t let it intimidate them, as it’s the only way to grow.”
We’re happy about the project and the benefits it brings to the community. We’re especially proud of how local businesses were appointed. The project liaison committee (PLC) has played an important role in ensuring seamless recruitment of labour, subcontracting and sourcing suppliers. Bringing them early into the process makes for easier negotiations with the community.”
The road upgrade in our area is already having positive spin offs. Not only are community members getting employed but they are also acquiring skills which will be of use in the long term. The economy is being stimulated positively as big brands are already coming in, which means more job creation.”
