As part of the first phase of the N2 Wild Coast Road (N2WCR) project, four haul roads are being constructed to facilitate the movement of equipment and materials to the Msikaba and Mtentu Bridge sites. Construction of the roads began in November 2016.

These haul roads are essential support structures for the construction of the Mtentu and Msikaba Bridge projects. The 8m-wide haul roads, which vary in length from 2.3km to 5.4km, will have both gravel and concrete components. In areas with steep road gradients, gravel roads will be supported by concrete pavements. These concrete pavements are being constructed to allow for all-weather access to the bridge sites. Stormwater infrastructure and stream and river crossings also form part of the haul road construction.

Between 50% and 70% of the work on the haul roads has been done, with the remaining work scheduled for completion at the end of October 2017.

The haul roads are temporary features of the N2WCR project and will be deconstructed once the construction of the road is completed. A rehabilitation process aimed at restoring the natural environment to its pre-construction state will be conducted following the haul roads’ deconstruction.
