Durban, 17 August 2026 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) advises motorists of a temporary nighttime road closure on the N2 northbound carriageway between the Mount Edgecombe and Sibaya Interchanges to install an overhead sign gantry which spans the N2.
“Construction is well advanced on the N2 and now requires installation of further road sign gantries. This closure is part of the ongoing upgrade process for the N2 between KwaMashu and Mdloti,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KZN Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer.
The temporary road closure will take place as follows:
- N2 North Bound (travelling from Durban to King Shaka Internation Airport) Carriageway Closure:
- This carriageway will be fully closed from 22:00, Saturday, 22 August 2026 to 02:00, Sunday 23 August 2026 between the Mount Edgecombe Interchange and the Sibaya Interchange
Note that the N2 South Bound (travelling from King Shaka International Airport to Durban) carriageway remains fully open to traffic.
As required for the safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place. Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period, find suitable staging areas or reroute using the alternative route options to avoid major congestion.
Please note that heavy motor vehicles cannot reach the M4 through Umhlanga (Green route in alternative route guide) due to the tight turns. Heavy vehicles are advised to use the R102 to Verulam if they have not joined the M4 before the N2 Mount Edgecombe Interchange. Note that the R102 to Verulam detour will significantly increase travel time.
“Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes. All road-users are advised to plan their routes ahead of time and where possible leave for destinations earlier than usual,” said Lowe.
