13 August 2026, Gauteng – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to inform road users of the temporary traffic accommodation on the N1-20 Freeway Northbound between km 51.0N and km 53.6N.

These temporary traffic accommodation measures are required to facilitate the reconfiguration of the traffic lanes for the construction of the new K60 Bridge by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDRT).

Closure Details: Phase 1D (Night 2)

• Date: 13th of August 2026 – 14th of August 2026
• Location: N1-20 Freeway Northbound, km 51.0N – km 53.6N
• Duration: 19:00 – 04:00
• Closure Lengths:
• Advanced Warning Area (1 000 m): A 1 km advanced warning area will be implemented to provide motorists with sufficient notification of the upcoming temporary lane closure. The area will include appropriate advance warning signage, speed reduction measures, and traffic guidance measures in accordance with the approved Traffic Accommodation Plan.
• Rivonia Road On-Ramp Traffic Accommodation: Temporary traffic accommodation signage will be installed on the Rivonia Road on-ramp to provide motorists entering the N1 Northbound with adequate advance warning of the temporary lane closure ahead. The signage will guide merging traffic safely into the temporary traffic arrangement while maintaining safe vehicle movements onto the freeway. No additional lane diversions will be required on the on-ramp, and traffic will merge directly into the temporary lane configuration on the N1 Northbound.
• Transition Area 1 (200 m): A 200 m transition area will be implemented to safely guide motorists away from the left-hand lanes and into the remaining available traffic lanes.
• Stabilization Zone 1 (150 m): A 150 m stabilization zone will be provided to allow motorists to adjust to the temporary lane arrangement before entering the subsequent transition area.
• Transition Area 2 (200 m): A further 200 m transition area will continue the progressive diversion of traffic into the temporary lane configuration while maintaining safe traffic flow through the closure area.
• Stabilization Zone 2 (150 m): A 150 m stabilization zone will be provided to maintain a consistent temporary traffic flow and allow motorists sufficient distance to adjust before entering the work area.
• Transition Area 3 (200 m): A third 200 m transition area will complete the lane shift arrangement prior to entering the protected work area.
• Stabilization Zone 3 (150 m): A 150 m stabilization zone will be maintained before the buffer zone to provide a stable traffic path and ensure motorists remain within the temporary lane configuration.
• Buffer Zone (100 m): A 100 m buffer zone will be maintained between live traffic and the work area to provide a safe separation distance between road users and construction activities.
• Work Zone (800 m): An 800 m work zone will be established to accommodate construction activities. The left-hand lanes will remain closed, with traffic accommodated within the available right-hand lanes under the temporary traffic arrangement.
• Transition Area 4 (200 m): A 200 m transition area will be provided following completion of the work activities to safely guide motorists back towards the normal lane configuration.
• Termination Area (300 m): A 300 m termination area will be provided to allow motorists to safely return to the normal traffic arrangement and exit the temporary traffic accommodation.

“We advise road users to plan their trips accordingly during this temporary lane diversion, adhere to the traffic accommodation signage and the flag persons advanced warnings. It is not only for your own safety but, also that of the construction personnel on site.” said Progress Hlahla, SANRAL’s Provincial Head for Gauteng.

Night 2 – Thursday, 13 August 2026 to Thursday, 14 August 2026 (19:00 – 04:00)

During Night 2, the N1-20 North bound’s left-hand lanes will be temporarily closed to accommodate the planned construction activities. Traffic will be accommodated within the remaining available lanes under the temporary lane diversion illustrated below. This traffic accommodation layout differs from that implemented during Night 1 (12 August 2026 to 13 August 2026) and applies only for the duration of the works from 13 August 2026 to 14 August 2026.
