Mahikeng, 19 August 2026 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to inform road users that the N14 national road between Kuruman and Vryburg remains partially reopened to only light motor vehicles.

“Following the receipt and assessment of test results from the section of the road that was previously submerged under water, it has been confirmed that the pavement structure has been weakened and currently does not have sufficient bearing capacity to safely accommodate heavy vehicles. Allowing heavy vehicles to travel over the affected section could result in further pavement deterioration and possible pavement failure, creating a significant safety risk to road users. As a precautionary measure, the N14, section 8 remains closed to heavy vehicles until the necessary remedial measures have been implemented, and the road is confirmed safe for heavy-vehicle traffic”

“SANRAL is continuing with efforts to reduce the water levels affecting the road and surrounding road reserve. Trenching is being undertaken along the road reserve to facilitate drainage and assist in lowering the water levels as quickly as possible. These interventions form part of SANRAL’s ongoing efforts to stabilise conditions and to reopen the N14-8 to all vehicle classes” said Mirriam Ramoba, SANRAL’s provincial Head for the North West Province.

“Heavy motor vehicle users are advised to continue using the designated alternative routes via the N18, N12 and R31. Any unauthorised use of the road contrary to the restrictions in place will constitute a violation of the applicable traffic regulations” added Ramoba.

SANRAL requests all road users to exercise caution, remain vigilant and to comply with all temporary traffic control measures and signage implemented on site.

SANRAL would like to express its sincere appreciation to road users, freight operators, local communities, and other stakeholders for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during the prolonged closure of this route.
