11 August 2026, Gauteng– The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to inform road users of the long-term temporary traffic accommodation on the N1-20 Freeway Southbound between km 53.8S and km 52.4S.
These temporary traffic accommodation measures are required to facilitate the construction of the new K60 Bridge by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDRT), over the N1-20 Freeway and to ensure the safe execution of the works while maintaining traffic flow through the construction zone.
This long-term traffic accommodation will remain in place for approximately three months to facilitate the ongoing bridge construction activities.
Closure Details – Phase 2A
- Date: 6th of August 2026 – 6th of November 2026
- Location: N1-20 Freeway Southbound, km 53,8S to km 52,4S.
- Duration: Approximately 3 months.
- Closure Lengths:
- Transition Area 1 (200 m): A 200 m transition area will be provided to safely divert traffic from the normal lane configuration into the temporary traffic accommodation.
- Buffer Zone (100 m): A 100 m buffer zone will be maintained between live traffic and the work area to provide a safety separation for both road users and construction personnel.
- Work Zone (100 m): A 100 m work zone will accommodate the construction activities. Traffic will be diverted through the temporary lane configuration while construction is undertaken within this protected area.
- Transition Area 2 (200 m): A 200 m transition area will be provided beyond the work zone to safely guide traffic back into the normal lane configuration.
“We advise road users to plan their trips accordingly during this temporary lane diversion, adhere to the traffic accommodation signage and the flag persons advanced warnings. It is not only for your own safety but, also that of the construction personnel on site.” said Progress Hlahla, SANRAL’s Provincial Head for Gauteng.
THE N1 SOUTHBOUND WILL REMAIN OPEN TO TRAFFIC UNDER A TEMPORARY LANE DIVERSION, AS SHOWN BELOW.
