30 July 2026, Gauteng– The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to inform road users of the temporary traffic accommodation on the N1-20 Freeway Southbound between km 54,0S and km 51,2S. These traffic accommodation measures are required to facilitate the reconfiguration of the traffic lanes, for the construction of the new K60 Bridge and ensure the safe execution of the works while maintaining traffic flow through the construction zone. Road users are advised to exercise caution, adhere to the temporary traffic signs, and comply with the directions of traffic accommodation personnel.

The temporary lane diversion will be implemented over two consecutive nights, with different traffic accommodation layouts applicable on each night. This notice relates specifically to Night 2 (Phase 1B). Road users travelling during Night 1 should refer to the separate Temporary Lane Closure Notice for the traffic accommodation arrangement applicable on 4 August 2026 to 5 August 2026.

 Closure Details: Phase 1B (Night 2)

• Date: 5th of August 2026 – 6th of August 2026
• Location: N1-20 Freeway Southbound, km 54.0S to km 51.2S
• Duration: 21:00 – 04:00
• Closure Lengths:

• Advanced Warning Area 1 (1 000 m): A 1 km advanced warning area will be implemented prior to the lane diversion to provide motorists with adequate notification of the upcoming temporary lane closure. The area will include appropriate advance warning signage, speed reduction measures, and traffic guidance measures in accordance with the approved Traffic Accommodation Plan.
• Allandale Road Off-Ramp Advanced Warning Area: A separate advanced warning area will be implemented for motorists approaching from the Allandale Road off-ramp. This will provide sufficient advance notification of the temporary traffic arrangement and allow motorists adequate time to select the appropriate lane and safely negotiate the temporary off-ramp alignment prior to reaching the diversion area.
• Allandale Road Off-Ramp Transition Area (200 m): A 200 m transition area will be provided to safely guide motorists exiting from the Allandale Road off-ramp into the temporary traffic arrangement while maintaining safe merging conditions and minimising conflicts between off-ramp and through traffic.
• Allandale Road Off-Ramp Stabilization Zone (150 m): A 150 m stabilization zone will be provided following the off-ramp transition area to allow motorists to adjust to the temporary alignment and maintain a stable traffic flow before proceeding through the temporary traffic arrangement.
• Transition Area 1 (200 m): A 200 m transition area will be provided to safely guide motorists from the affected lanes into the temporary traffic arrangement.
• Stabilization Zone 1 (150 m): A 150 m stabilization zone will be provided to allow motorists to adjust to the temporary lane configuration and maintain a stable traffic flow before entering the next transition area.
• Transition Area 2 (200 m): A further 200 m transition area will be implemented to continue the progressive diversion of traffic into the temporary lane arrangement.
• Stabilization Zone 2 (150 m): A 150 m stabilization zone will be maintained to provide motorists with sufficient distance to adjust to and maintain the temporary traffic configuration.
• Transition Area 3 (200 m): A 200 m transition area will be provided prior to the protected work area to complete the required lane shift arrangement.
• Stabilization Zone 3 (150 m): A 150 m stabilization zone will be maintained between the final transition area and the buffer zone to ensure motorists remain within the temporary traffic configuration.
• Buffer Zone (100 m): A 100 m buffer zone will be provided between live traffic and the work zone to create a safe separation distance between motorists and construction activities.
• Work Zone (800 m): An 800 m work zone will be established to accommodate the planned construction activities. The affected lanes will remain closed, with traffic safely accommodated within the remaining available lanes in accordance with the approved Traffic Accommodation Plan.

It is not only for your own safety but, also that of the construction personnel on site.” said Progress Hlahla, SANRAL’s Provincial Head for Gauteng.

Night 2 – Wednesday, 5 August 2026 to Thursday, 6 August 2026 (21:00 – 04:00)

During Night 2, the N1-20 South bound’s three left-hand lanes will be temporarily closed. Traffic will be accommodated within the three right-hand lanes under the temporary lane diversion illustrated below. This traffic accommodation layout differs from that implemented during Night 1 and applies only for the duration of the works on 5 August 2026 to 6 August 2026.
