20 August 2026, Western Cape – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) will resume with construction of the doubling of the Gwaing River Bridge over the N2 national road in George, Western Cape Province.

Construction on the project came to a halt after the two preceding contractors were faced with financial difficulties and were unable to compete the project. Previous attempts to procurement contractors thereafter were also not successful. The new contract was awarded to Power Construction (Pty) Ltd at a total value of R170 million (excl. VAT and CPA). The project is anticipated to take over 15 months, and construction period is estimated to start mid-October this year after a three-month mobilisation period between July to October 2026, with the anticipated project completion mid-January 2028.

The mobilisation period, which has already started is the period in which the contractor prepares for the commencement of works, establishes resources, engages with stakeholders and affected communities, develops plans to achieve SANRAL’s transformation objectives, and ensures all contractual, operational, and statutory obligations are in place.

“The scope of work that will be undertaken is the completion of the new 180m long 2nd bridge, repair and refurbishment of the existing bridge, dualling of ±2.2 km of the existing N2, minor widening and resurfacing of the existing carriageway. Despite all the delays encountered, SANRAL is committed to successfully completing this project,” said SANRAL’s Provincial Head for the Western Cape Province.
